I was trying to sleep on a bus crossing the golden gate bridge... I had my head phones in listening to music but I distinctly remember the people on the bus were much more talkative than normal... at one point the bus driver stopped the bus, stood up and said something along the lines of "Look, you all need to relax, let me get you into the city and we'll all have to figure it out from there"... I had no clue what he was talking about...
I walked from my bus stop to my coffee place and they were closed... so I walked to the office and the media conference room was filled with people... but I didn't think twice... I vaguely remember the blue sky and the black smoke from the first tower on the large screen, but at the time didn't know what it was...
went upstairs... boss told me what happened... went downstairs... watched the 2nd tower get hit... the first fall... to this day I remember thinking it was fake... part of a movie... I couldn't watch anymore.
I was stuck in the city... no way home... couldn't get a hold of any of my friends or family... when I finally did I was practically numb from the thoughts racing thru my brain, being on the top floor of a high rise building in the financial district of San Francisco... rumors were that the bridges were all closed (they weren't)... my best friend, roommate, mom & ex boyfriend all eventually talked to me that morning... I have no idea what we said to each other....
Everyone in the office had left except me and one other person... we decided at lunch to walk about 12 blocks to the main bus hub to get home... there were very few people on the streets... and at one point... a plane flew over... the entire city looked up at that plane... I remember my heart beating so loud my ears hurt... we'd heard all planes had been grounded... what was this plane doing??
There was me and one other person on the bus home... it was the weirdest feeling being all alone that day.
I decided I was going to stop working in San Francisco on October 7th... the day we invaded Afghanistan....

It is weird how we remember exactly where we were that day...all of the events that happened, like they just happened yesterday. We live by the airport and my youngest was only 6 months old at the time, I would sit on our porch and rock him to sleep...the days following were silent...no planes flying overhead, the silence is something I will never forget.
My dad can tell you, even point out, where he was when he heard about Kennedy being shot...I always thought that was strange...but I can do the same...only about 9/11.
